<p>Enhancing your web site’s visual appeal and structure through evidence led design can have a significant impact on customer engagement and ultimately conversion to sales and/or leads.<br />
As one of the UK’s leading visual identification service for cats and dogs, the company has built-up corporate relationships with major animal re-homing charities – including The Dogs Trust and Wood Green – which includes a first year subscription to the service with every animal they re-home. While this strategy continues to deliver strong year 1 business, renewal rates via the web site have proved extremely low compared to other less cost-effective channels.</p>
<p>Additionally the company is aiming to expand their corporate relationships and recently came to feel that the site did little to support their pitches. Pipstone Online Solutions were therefore engaged to review the branding of the site as well as the home page structure to encourage more renewals.</p>
<p><strong><a rel="attachment wp-att-194" href="http://www.pipstone.com/case-study/pet24before-300x229/"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-194" title="Amateur Website Design" src="http://www.pipstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/pet24before-300x229.jpg" alt="Website design" width="300" height="229" /></a></strong></p>
<p><strong>Dull and lifeless, the old site did little to inspire visitors – reflecting in poor customer retention rates.</strong>?<br />
As well as being visually unappealing, our immediate observation was that the homepage failed to adequately describe the core service the company offered and featured confusing navigation making usability a key issue.<br />
Equally the company&#8217;s brand presence was weak and amateurish which for corporates and consumers – for whom the point of renewal would be their first encounter with the brand – did little to inspire confidence, enthusiasm and a sense of value.<br />
<strong>Our Response</strong><br />
As a first step to overcoming this we set to work on a visual overhaul of the company?s home page and primary navigation addressing each of the issues identified in our initial design audit.</p>
<p>&nbsp;<br />
<strong>Bright and vibrant, our new visual design delivers greater visual impact and brand presence with a clear value statement taking centre stage.</strong><a rel="attachment wp-att-193" href="http://www.pipstone.com/case-study/pet24after-300x229/"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-193" title="Website Redesign Bristol" src="http://www.pipstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/pet24after-300x229.jpg" alt="Design to increase conversion" width="300" height="229" /></a><br />
Shifting the dominant colour from red to blue not only provides a friendlier, fresher user experience but also allows the brand’s red to be used as an ‘accent’ colour &#8211;  directing the user’s attention as required to improve usability and click-thru rates.<br />
Greater visual prominence is given to ‘calls to action’ – ie: ‘Buy Now’ and ‘Renew Membership’ etc. – while being set into a new visual footer which further supports the selling process with customer testimonials and a simple ticker displaying the number of pets the service has safely returned to customers – vital proof of service value which was simply missing from the old site.<br />
<strong>Return on Investment</strong><br />
After just two weeks Google Analytics (embedded in the site) already demonstrate a measurable return on investment with a clear shift in user click-thrus away from random browsing to the website&#8217;s key calls to action and a 218% increase in the average time users spend on the site.<br />
Crucially however, click-share for the home page&#8217;s &#8216;Renew Membership&#8217; action has instantly increased from 5.1% to 25% demonstrating that the site&#8217;s users are now able to immediately identify the path they need to take to renew their account and are more confident to take that step.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
Thereafter a substantial increase in visitor numbers has been measured on the first renewals information page and 185% increase in users clicking through to the buying process itself.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
We are now working with the company to deliver a revised renewal process which we expect to double conversion rates thereby achieving the client&#8217;s medium term objectives within the first 90 days of our engagement and delivering sustainable growth through improved customer retention.</p>

<p>Online marketing techniques change with the wind and, as a marketer, it is often a full time job keeping up with new trends. But, when Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, told the world at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (February 2010) that &#8220;Mobile is pretty much the answer to everything&#8221; it was suddenly clear which way to go. He also stated that &#8220;Anything that Google creates from here on out will be first on the mobile platform and then worked around for the desktop&#8221; which means that mobile marketing needs to be as sophisticated, if not more sophisticated than what we are used to now.</p>
<p>Why is Google, who has 70% of the search traffic globally, so keen on mobile? The answer is at least four fold; there are now at least four times the mobile devices in use than there are computers, people generally keep their phones/devices within three feet of them twenty four hours a day and three hundred and sixty five days a year, just as the use of social media has exploded in the last eighteen months online, so will it explode even greater when mobile, when people are out shopping they are comparing prices and even making substantial purchases from their phones- a man recently paid $75,000 for a Corvette on eBay from his mobile device. Google likes to give its customers what they want and this gives marketers a great opportunity to provide a solution to businesses wanting to reach out to their customers in a whole different way.</p>
<p>Traditionally, the best way for a business to keep in touch with their customers was via email but as users receive more and more junk in their in boxes everyday, it becomes harder for the business to deliver their message. Not with mobile; on average mobile messages are opened and answered within fifteen minutes of being sent- this is an extraordinary opportunity for direct response marketing and, putting it in the hands of small, local businesses could mean the difference between an average year and an extraordinary one. For example, imagine a lunchtime sandwich shop who decides to market to their customer base via their mobile phone.</p>
<p>The sandwich shop could run surveys as to what is the favourite filling, bread or side order thus engaging with their customers; more than this, they can run specials and let their customers know what is on the menu at 11:45am every day and offer a 10% discount with the coupon that has been delivered to the mobile device. This is the pinnacle of direct response marketing thus far and what is even better is that it is trackable. This kind of communication can work with schools (&#8216;no school today because of snow&#8217;), doctors &amp; dentists sending appointment reminders, mortgage brokers alerting their customers of a rate rise and the emergency services alerting people of floods- the list goes on.</p>
<p>So, if Google says that &#8220;Mobile is the answer to everything&#8221; then as businesses, we have to exploit this platform for all that it can offer us.</p>
